WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released the following statement:

“President Biden is doing what should have been done months and months ago.

“On March 13, 2020, I led nearly 60 Members of Congress in calling on President Trump to use his authority under the Defense Production Act to manufacture vital medical supplies to meet the extreme demand during the coronavirus pandemic. In our letter, we referenced that on that day, the CDC had reported 1,629 COVID-19 cases across 46 states and D.C.—the pandemic was in its infancy in our country. Less than two weeks later, as case counts skyrocketed, I introduced a bipartisan resolution calling on the president to immediately share with Congress plans for the use of the Defense Production Act authorities and affirming that the House stood ready to make additional funds available to meet America’s needs. In the meantime, I spent countless hours on the phone with local manufacturers and state officials, desperately trying to connect those eager to help into a supply chain with no organization or central authority whatsoever. It was simply maddening.

“We should have seen swift and decisive action then. It’s a disgrace that the American people had to wait this long for the supplies they need to get us through this crisis, but I’m heartened that they won’t have to wait a day longer. It’s high time we unleashed the power of American manufacturing, so central to our identity here in Michigan. I share this joy with workers in my district who now may experience the patriotic duty of using their skills and craft to put COVID-19 behind us.”
