Levin on President Trump’s Veto of the NDAA
WARREN, MI – Today, Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09) released the following statement after President Trump vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act:
“Since the day he set foot in the Oval Office, Donald J. Trump has used the presidency for one thing: his own personal gain. Nearly four years later, his motivations are no different.
“He has vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) not out of concern for the security of the American people, but for himself and himself alone. He’s fixated on two things: repealing an obscure law so that he can spread dangerous lies to the American people unabated; and blocking the renaming of military bases that commemorate Confederate leaders, i.e., traitors to our country. There may be no more fitting end to his presidency: a last-ditch attempt to create his own reality—a far cry from that of American families struggling to get by during this pandemic and economic crisis—and to continue to stoke racial animus in order to divide our communities rather than heal our wounds, because he believes that division serves his political interests. And now he is even threatening to veto a bipartisan COVID relief package over a charade to demand $2,000 stimulus checks that Democrats support wholeheartedly. The only thing standing between those checks and the American people are Republicans in Congress who, like the president, are focused less on struggling working families and more on pleasing their corporate donors to suit their political interests.
“I have made no secret of my desire to get our country’s bloated military budget in order and invest in our schools, our infrastructure and the pressing needs of working families like the ones in Michigan’s 9th District. That is why I voted against the NDAA just weeks ago. But I will help override Donald Trump’s veto in order to reject his depredations and slam the door on a shameful chapter animated by one person’s selfishness and malice. Let us move ahead and govern based on the best interest of the American people, not Donald Trump.
