Levin Calls on GOP Leadership to Remove Greene from Education Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Andy Levin (D-MI), Member of the House Education & Labor Committee, signed a letter led by Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (D-CT) sent to GOP Leadership asking that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) not be seated on the Education & Labor Committee in light of her endorsement of violence and conspiracy theories, particularly with regard to school shootings.
“The need to immediately remove Representative Greene from the Committee on Education and Labor is especially urgent, given her prior statements on school shootings and mass casualty events,” the lawmakers wrote. “This committee has jurisdiction over matters related to school climate and safety for elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education.”
“Representative Greene, who has shown such a heinous and wanton disregard for school safety, student trauma, and ultimately, the truth, has proven that she cannot be expected to engage in good faith discussions of policy,” the lawmakers continued.
“Having met and been inspired by David Hogg and other Parkland survivors – who are between the ages of my own children – I was shaken by the video of Rep. Greene harassing Mr. Hogg,” said Rep. Levin. “My heart breaks for the parents of victims hurt by her denial of their children’s very real murders. Can you even imagine?! Many of her statements are troubling but, first and foremost, she must not sit on a committee that deals with the safety of our schoolchildren when she is in complete denial of reality. Her other statements and actions warrant investigation as well, and I hope that removing her from this Committee is a first step in the process of accountability.”
